Cyber insurance is a much discussed but ill understood topic that has made a resurgence among some in Washington as the silver bullet solution for information security. While the promise has yet to deliver on the hype, there are reasons to believe that insurance is a useful tool for firms of all shapes and sizes in investing in security.

Join New America's Cybersecurity Initiative and Just Security for conversations with leading experts in cyber security policy and practice to discuss the mechanics of cyber insurance and how to reinvigorate a moribund insurance marketplace.

AGENDA

Opening Remarks
Ian Wallace
Co-director, Cybersecurity Initiative and Senior Fellow, International Security Program, New America
Session 1: The Mechanics of Cyber-Risk: The idea of cyber-insurance has been around since the late 1990s but has yet to have the impact some had hoped for. In many cases data breaches and other larger cyber incidents are treated as force majeure, or a force of nature, and remain uncovered by insurance. This status quo is due in large part to difficulties in quantifying risk. So we ask: what is cyber-risk and can we quantify it?
