Myanmar: The Fight for Free Expression
In collaboration with PEN America
Event
As government crackdown on the media continues in Myanmar, the newly-formed PEN Myanmar is part of a growing movement of young civil society organizations mobilizing to defend fragile, hard-won freedoms ahead of the crucial 2015 national elections. Against the backdrop of deeply-rooted ethno-religious tensions, the country is still facing challenges in the fight against the unjust jailing of journalists and for free expression protections.
Join New America NYC and PEN America in a discussion with leading Burmese rights defenders on the state of press freedoms, the wider free speech environment, and what the US and international community can do to promote democracy in Myanmar.
